Remember science is meant to be fun!
All the GCSE science courses at Prestige College use a practical approach to reinforce understanding and ensure an interactive and enjoyable learning environment. The courses are all completed in one year during which time the GCSE syllabus is completely covered.
At Prestige College we aim to encourage an investigative approach to science and there is access to a wide range of ICT resources which are regularly used and the relevance of physics, chemistry and biology in the modern world are emphasised.
Core Science
The core science is ideal for those who want a basic course and is most suited to students who are not planning to study sciences at A level. It is taught with plenty of relevance to the everyday and provides an interesting overview of how the natural world affects our lives. It covers the basics of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and provides a stand alone GCSE science qualification. The course is made up of Physics unit 1, Chemistry unit 1 and Biology unit 1 with practical coursework in the spring term. Each of these units is worth 25% of the final GCSE mark.
Additional Science
Additional Science is recommended for able students who are interested in science and may want to take one or more of the sciences at A level. It covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics in more depth than core science but with the same practical and interactive approach to the lessons. Additional science provides a stand alone GCSE qualification or can be taken with core science to provide 2 GCSEs. The course is made up of Physics unit 2, Chemistry unit 2 and Biology unit 2 with practical coursework in the spring term. Each of these units is worth 25% of the final GCSE mark.
Note: In order to study science A levels at Abbey College grade A or A* in Additional Science is needed.
Separate sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology
The separate sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) are most suitable for the students who have a real enthusiasm for the subject, plan to take science at A level and who may want to study science at degree level. It is possible to choose just one or two of the sciences if you have a favourite rather than study all three so there is plenty of flexibility when choosing options. Each science subject will lead to a separate GCSE qualification and incorporates units 1, 2 and 3 along with coursework.
