The English syllabus we follow is AQA's linear specification.

There is one examination paper, taken in the summer, which accounts for 60% of the overall grade. The examination is formed of two sections. Section A tests the skills of reading and comprehension of non-fiction texts. Section B requires students to complete two creative writing tasks.

A total of 5 coursework tasks account for the remaining 40% of the overall grade.

You will write controlled assessment pieces covering the topics:

• Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
• The Tempest by William Shakespeare
• A selection of poetry
• Writing to persuade
• Writing to entertain

There are topic differences in content for Foundation and Higher tier.

Controlled assessment is completed in the early stages of the course. The transferable skills, learned whilst completing the coursework portfolio, are then developed enabling students to succeed in the summer exams.
