School Experience:

I've spent a lot of time teaching younger kids, during extended roles at after-school clubs in Primary Schools in Bristol and Manchester and as a primary age football coach. During that time I undertook training to NVQ Level 2 in Playwork and hold an FA Level 1 coaching badge.

Teaching Style:

My thorough training by the Tutor Trust has been invaluable in honing my approach to tutoring. I have spent a lot of time thinking about and developing my approach, and have benefitted from the advice of many experienced professionals.

I believe there are three central aspects to good tutoring: Listening, creativity and planning. I always encourage students to open up about what they do and don't understand, and how they'd like to proceed, as well as getting to know their work. This allows me to develop session plans which get to the important stuff, rather than just going through the motions, and engages the student with their own learning, an essential factor in successful teaching. Understanding what kind of a learner the student is is very important, in order to plan sessions which engage their attention. I can then develop creative session plans which are fun, rewarding, and different to classroom learning or lectures.

Often the key to good tutoring is finding a new way for a student to engage with a subject they are studying, offering fresh perspectives and approaches. Sometimes (as was the case when I received GCSE tutoring) it is simply offering the student a chance to be the focus of attention rather than being forgotten amongst a big class. The key is that tutoring offers the chance for the student to be recognised as an individual, and taught in a way which is reactive to their individuality. It is, I believe, the best way to learn.

About Me:

I've spent a lot of time working in schools and enjoy teaching a lot. During my degree I really came to value and enjoy academic study (although it definitely wasn't enjoyable all the time… ) and I think that helps me when teaching. I find it hugely rewarding to see a student become confident with a new skill or idea as a result of my teaching, and I love to share and discuss interesting ideas information.
