School Experience:

Having worked teaching level 3 biology for over 15 years, I am familiar and up to date with the examination board requirements of students and also the type of student these courses attract. I also have good knowledge of the university application process in respect of units desired and points required for specific courses. I have considerable, direct, formal teaching experience using a variety of methods in the classroom, not least of all through my long term role at The Manchester College where I was responsible for running AS Human Biology (Edexcel) and AS/A2 Biology (AQA) as well as coordinating access and BTEC programmes throughout the 8 years I worked with the college. Aside from the direct teaching, I have also contributed to the review, planning and development of Access Programmes initially with OCN and then with Certa when they moved over. Not just with the Manchester College but I have also completed A Level Biology teaching with 4 other colleges, providing me witha greater experience of the variety of students studying on these programmes. I am also currently working with OCR as a moderator for AS and GCSE Biology and keep myself abreast of new developments within examination boards.

In addition to my work in the classroom in a variety of different settings, I have also gained experience working online with students through my own business, both with private students and through contract with Tute.com, for whom I was contracted to work for a period of 1 year. This experience enabled me to foster relationships with students whom I would never meet in person, to be able to support and guide them through the learning process. During this work I also developed a great many online teaching resources, in the form of powerpoints and pdf worksheets to aid students in their learning. Many of my private students were studying independently via online courses working around their current job and relied heavily on myself as their tutor to supply suitable learning materials, ensure relevant understanding of the subject material and that work submitted was of the appropriate standard. Running my own business, I was always available to my students, being acutely aware that a student in panic does not want to wait several days for a response from their tutor before they are able to continue progressing towards their deadline.

I have taught many A level students studying with AQA, OCR, WJEC and Edexcel, both in college and privately, working with students who found the work or the schedule challenging, in a positive way with good results. Last year I completed Additional contracts for intensive 1 week revision programmes with Optimal Tutors for GCSE, AS and A2. Students on these courses are aiming for a specific grade to gain entrance to university on their desied programme so keeping to point, keeping the students on target and providing good support based on prior teaching experience for ISA3 and ISA6 is essential.

Whilst biology is my main subject area, I have also taught GCSE maths and supported students in numeracy including preparing teachers of non-scientific subjects for their professional skills test. All students I have tutored in maths have achieved at least one grade higher than their predicted grade.
